What is chin Liposuction?
A Chin Liposuction helps women and men alike regain confidence in their appearance by removing fat and sculpting this area of the body with precision. Liposuction is one of the most successful methods in use today for removing fat in this area of the face.
Patients should note that, as with all liposuction procedures, a chin lipo is not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
For a neck liposuction procedure, we differentiate between 3 primary regions:
- The Submental Chin
This area is found right under the chin along the jawbone. Excess fat in this region can cause an older and chubbier appearance in both young and old people.
- The Jowls
Defined as an area of the lower cheeks, the jowls accumulate fat as a result of weight gain and the aging process.
- Portions of the cheeks
Our doctors treat different areas of the cheeks during liposuction procedures that focus on the face and neck. Excess fat deposits in the cheeks could be removed to ensure a natural overall appearance.
Am I a Candidate for Chin Liposuction?
When you age or gain weight, this chin and jowls area becomes less defined, resulting in a flabby and sagging appearance. Although aging and weight gain are common precursors to loose skin or chubbiness in this area of the body, slim younger individuals may also have issues in regard to excess fat and skin in the neck, chin, and jowls region.
Individuals with moderate excess fat in the Chin region
For some people, a double chin could be a genetic thing. For these people, despite how thin they may be, they may still have a little pocket of fat under the chin.
Chin liposuction is particularly recommended for individuals who have mild to moderate levels of excess fat in the neck and face area, mild to moderate skin sagging, and a good underlying bone structure. Younger patients with more skin elasticity usually fit the criteria of this first group.
Patients who follow a healthy lifestyle before and after the procedure are the most likely to get the best results.
Note: that as with all liposuction procedures, a chin lipo is not a substitute for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Individuals with excess fat in the chin and with significant excess skin
Reasonably thin women and men with large skin folds or extreme sagging in the jowls or under the chin might benefit from an additional procedure, a Neck Lift.
For Patients who skin elasticity or/and have considerable excess skin in the jowls and chin region, a combination of a Chin Lipo and a Neck Lift can be a better option. The combination of these procedures can be very effective in reshaping a balanced profile and well-defined jawline.
We can combine these procedures:
- Liposuction (WaterLipo in our case to remove the excess fat)
- Cervicoplasty (the removal of excess skin from under the chin)
- Platysmaplasty (surgery to tighten loose, sagging neck muscles)
These additional procedures are recommended for severe double-chin cases and those accompanied by sagging neck skin or loose jowls.
What alternatives exist to treat a Double Chin?
Reshaping of the double chin can be done with a variety of invasive and non-invasive techniques.
At the Chicago Liposuction by Lift Body Center, we use a sophisticated liposuction technology called Water Lipo.
Traditional liposuction methods require general anesthesia and hospitalization, but Waterlipo™ is an outpatient procedure that uses a mild sedative and local anesthesia in the treatment area to allow the patient to remain completely awake, but deeply relaxed, and pain-free the entire time.
The Waterlipo™ method is extremely safe and effective; it uses water pressure to gently and safely dislodge the fat cells present in the neck, chin, and jowls area and wash them out of the body.
The procedure’s gentle methods allow patients to see the actual results almost immediately, which gives our staff the opportunity to make adjustments where necessary to maximize time and success.
The use of Laser-assisted Liposuction – with machines like SmartLipo – can aid tighten loose skin. The laser light can help achieve a fine definition of the neck and jawline.
Some doctors use CoolSculpting to freeze the fat in the chin area. With a Coolsculpting session of 45 minutes, the fat volume can be reduced from 20% to 25%. A double chin removal with this non-invasive technique might require more 2 or more session depending on the case. There is usually a minimum waiting time of 1 month between sessions. If you want to see faster and more dramatic results you might opt for Lipo surgery.
Kybella (deoxycholic acid), is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to reduce fat under the chin for an improved profile.
Kybella is administered via multiple small injections placed under the chin, so no incisions are necessary. The process only takes less than 20 minutes, but more than 50% of the patients will require more than 5 treatments. Some of the more common side effects of Kybella include bruising, burning, redness, swelling and possible itching.
Kybella results depend upon the professional administering the injections. This also applies to any cosmetic injectable, take Botox as an example. The first and most important thing is to find a well-trained cosmetic professional who has experience administering Kybella.
Is Chin Liposuction enough or are additional procedures required?
In some cases, patients looking to redefine their chin area may require alternate or additional procedures:
- Reasonably thin women and men with large skin folds or extreme sagging in the jowls or under the chin may benefit more from a facelift/neck lift procedure than from a liposuction procedure. In certain cases, a combination of chin liposuction with a neck or facelift may be recommended.
- Older women and men with less skin elasticity and excess fat should consider having chin liposuction and another supporting treatment to avoid the development of sagging skin after fat removal. After the removal of fat, the skin of older individuals isn’t as likely to “bounce back”. In their case liposuction can be paired with a neck lift to get rid of any loose skin remaining after the fat in the area is removed.
The toning effects of surgical procedures such as Waterlipo™ or SmartLipo help reduce sagging, but older patients may require another procedure to achieve their cosmetic goals.
- Patients that possess higher amounts of buccal fat, or fat stored on the inside of the mouth, will undergo a slightly different procedure than those patients whose facial and neck fat is externally located. Liposuction can’t currently remove buccal fat, so in this case, the patient and the surgeons will discuss other possible options and outcomes, and what additional or alternative procedures may help the patient the most.
What is the cost?
For the first liposuction area, the cost starts at $4,500.
This amount varies depending on the amount of fat to be removed and what other procedures the patient wants to have done in addition to chin liposuction.
Adding one or more procedures to the same session will result in a lower cost per procedure.
Before each liposuction session, we arrange a consultation with every patient to discuss their personal goals and any concerns they might have. During the initial consultation, patients can also discuss financing options with our staff.
We give patients access to affordable and accessible financing options from multiple lending partners. Our partnership with United Medical Credit, for example, provides patients with a monthly payment plan based on the person’s financial situation. This personalized payment plan is free from fees and interest fluctuations.

What is the Recovery like?
Liposuction Surgery – Small incisions, no stitches and a couple of days off
For invasive procedures like (SmartLipo or WaterLipo), recovery times with chin lipo are pretty short.
We recommend that patients receiving this type of liposuction take at least 1-3 days off to rest and recover after the procedure. Many patients are able to go back to work in as little as one day after surgery.
Chin Lipo surgery requires only a couple of small incisions in the neck, chin, and jowls area; the incisions are generally located beneath the chin or behind the ears. These incisions don’t require any stitches, and they heal within a just few days while leaving little to no scarring.
During recovery, patients should take good care of themselves and follow their doctor’s instructions. Chin liposuction is a procedure with minimal risk and very little required recovery time, but it’s still important that all patients take the necessary time to heal. Below are some important rules to follow during recovery:
- Eat a Healthy Diet
Eating lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will ensure that your body is getting plenty of valuable nutrients during the recovery period. Your body needs these nutrients to rebuild damaged tissues.
- Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water during recovery so that your body will be able to flush out toxins and rebuild tissues faster.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities
Strenuous exercise also must be avoided for 4 weeks. Heavy exercise during the recovery period can put extra stress on the body during a time when the body needs every ounce of energy to repair and heal damaged tissues. Light activity is important to help avoid blood clots after surgery.
- Wear the Compression Garment
For the first 72 hours after the procedure, patients must wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and bruising. After the first 24 hours of wearing the compression garment, patients can resume normal daily practices like face washing and shaving.
- Take Prescribed Medication on Schedule
Our doctors may prescribe certain medications. Take these according to the prescribed schedule. Pain medication may be optional.
When would I see the Results?
The results of the neck, chin, and jowls liposuction procedure can be a particularly noticeable and self-esteem boosting change for many patients because the face and the neck are the most noticeable areas of the body.
While swelling from Chin Liposuction tends to subside after several weeks, this is not the case for every patient.
Some patients start to see positive results after 3 weeks. For others, the progress of results can most noticeable after 6-8 weeks.
For patients who had liposuction of a large double chin, results can be visible within 1 week of the procedure. For those less extreme chin cases, results can take 2 to as much as 6 months to visualize.
Patients who follow a healthy lifestyle and the surgeon’s instructions are the most likely to get the best results.
Are there any potential risks and complications?
We consider Liposuction as a safe and effective chin liposuction technique because:
- it’s gentler on the delicate regions of the face
- it bypasses the risks of general anesthesia (nausea, longer recovery time, etc.)
- there is minimal scarring
- more natural-looking results.
Most cases are very successful, but as with any other cosmetic procedure, there can be (although minimal) risks and limitations. We have the obligation to inform every patient about these. Feel free to as us about all chin liposuction risks and limitations.
General risks include infection, blood loss, scarring.
Chin Liposuction Specific Risks and Side effects
- Neck tightness
It’s normal to experience neck tightness after chin lipo. Depending on the patient, the tense/tight sensation may last for up to a few months after surgery. We provide our patients with specific instructions and other resources (like medication) to minimize issues such as neck tightness after the procedure.
- Bruising, swelling, and numbness
Slight bruising and swelling are expected after any liposuction procedure. Patients wear compression garments after surgery to minimize swelling. Bruising usually disappears within the first week post-op. Swelling disappears gradually over the course of a similar time period. Numbness and skin sensation alterations aren’t as common as swelling and bruising, but it’s still a normal side effect to experience after the surgery. Typically, normal skin sensations return within a month, but occasionally, numbness or nerve irritation persists.
Slight scarring is common after an invasive procedure such as Liposuction, especially after having to create incisions to insert cannulas. Although only tiny incisions are made, these incisions can still sometimes leave scars. Our surgeons make sure to conceal incisions in areas that are barely noticeable, such as behind the ears or under the chin.
Patients may experience some bleeding from the site of the incisions. This is not uncommon. Excessive bleeding due to a Waterlipo™ procedure is extremely rare. In case of excessive bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.
- Muscle spasms
Spasming at or around the treated area may occur in some patients. Massaging the spasming area can help control the problem. Spasms are not unusual but occur less frequently after a few weeks.
