Posted on: November 14, 2022

In my office, I receive a large number of patients who want to have a buttock augmentation and as is normal in all people, they ask me different questions about it to clarify their doubts about the aesthetic intervention and to calm the fears present when they think they will enter to the operating room or on recovery from the intervention. As a plastic surgeon. I want to share with you the answers to the most common doubts so that you have a clearer vision about this aesthetic procedure that will make your buttocks look more voluminous and with better projection.

What Methods are Used for Buttock Augmentation?

In my professional practice, I use two techniques to augment my patients’ buttocks: the first is gluteoplasty with implants, where I place cohesive silicone gel prostheses on the buttocks; The incision I make during the procedure is located in the intergluteal region, so the final scar is hidden and the appearance of the buttocks is natural. The second technique that I use is lipoinjection; It consists of injecting the patient’s own fat into the buttocks; I obtain the fat thanks to a previous liposuction, commonly with adipose tissue from the abdomen and back.

How long does Gluteoplasty Surgery with Implants take?

Depending on the patient and the size of the implant to be inserted, the buttock augmentation can last from 1 to 2 hours. No clinical case is the same and for that reason, the time in the operating room may vary slightly.

What is the Type of Anesthesia?

As a plastic surgeon., I can apply general anesthesia or regional anesthesia, depending on the decision made in the first consultation and in the previous assessment with the anesthesiologist. In the first medical meeting I make sure to discuss with you all the details of the buttock augmentation surgery so that the approaches of both parties are clear. Regarding this important topic such as anesthesia, I will refer you to a consultation with an anesthesiologist so that he can also make his assessment and together we will determine that your body is in optimal conditions to proceed with the buttock augmentation surgery.

What Volume Should the Implants Have?

As I already told you, in the first consultation, I made an assessment. Depending on the size of your hips and the projection you want on your buttocks, we will decide the best size for you. It is important to highlight that, just as there are breast implants of various sizes, the same happens with buttock implants. The difference is that buttock augmentation prostheses have a different design with a lower profile and a wider base to give a better contour in the buttocks and a more adequate distribution of the chosen volume.

How is the type of implant chosen?

In my office I will introduce you to the types of implants I use for buttock augmentation: anatomical or round. Depending on the volume you want or the projection you want to give your buttocks, we will determine which type of implant is best for you, I will give you my best recommendations so that the results are as expected.

What indications should I follow before a Buttock Augmentation?

Before the procedure, I recommend you follow a healthy diet, which involves reducing the consumption of flour and fat, and increasing the intake of vegetables and fruits. Foods rich in vitamin C will help in the healing process and increase resistance to infection. Also, I advise you to wash the perineum area with antiseptic substances three days before the buttock augmentation surgery.

On the other hand, you must stop smoking and drinking alcohol at least two weeks before buttock surgery, since these habits hinder the healing process and can cause risks both in surgery and in your recovery.

It is essential that in the first consultation you tell me what medications you take to decide if you are going to replace them with others temporarily or if you should stop taking them for a specific time, so that they do not negatively affect the surgery or the recovery stage. It will also be important for you to tell me what your diet is like, if you do physical exercises or if you have undergone other operations, either cosmetic or for health reasons.

What Care Should I Have in the Gluteoplasty Postoperative Period?

I recommend that you take analgesics, antibiotics and muscle relaxants during the first week according to the medical indications that I give you before leaving the hospital.

From your first day of recovery, you can take short walks to promote blood circulation throughout the body and, if you are going to sit, do it with good posture on soft surfaces; you can use a cushion or pillow. After the first week, you will be able to walk a longer distance and sit longer, but always in an upright position. For your recovery to be positive and the results to be as desired, you must:

  • Sleep in a face down position for the first 2 weeks.
  • Use the postoperative girdle for 1 month to help reduce inflammation and that your implants have the necessary support during your recovery.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
  • Do not lift heavy objects, bend over or carry children or animals.
  • Avoid physical activity or sports during the first 4 to 5 weeks.
  • Sit on padded chairs, never on hard surfaces for the first ten days.

After Surgery, When Can I Sunbathe?

You can sunbathe once the swelling and bruising have disappeared; It occurs around 20 days and is a completely normal process. Do not be scared by the initial appearance of the skin, since with days it will recover its original tone and there will be no trace that you underwent buttock augmentation surgery.

What should I do if I need an intramuscular injection and have implants in my buttocks?

Intramuscular injections in the buttocks after implant placement in this area are contraindicated. You must inform the person who is going to inject you that you have implants, because, in that case, the injections should not be applied in the buttocks, since the prostheses would break. The person will choose to place it in a different place, such as the thigh or shoulder.

When will I see the results of the procedure?

The results of the intervention are visible immediately, however, the final result is after 3 months, when most of the inflammation has gone down and your body has adapted to the buttock implants.

Do Butt Implants Cause Any Discomfort?

Like any surgical procedure, initially you will feel some discomfort that is normal during the first days of recovery. In my office, I explain to my patients, prior to their surgery, the necessary indications regarding how to sit, how to sleep and how to take their analgesics, so that the disability is shortened and it is not going to be an unpleasant experience. My goal will always be to provide you with the best professional service and offer you all the necessary medical attention so that you are satisfied with the results of the buttock augmentation.
